The Science Behind
Earthing & Grounding
This page exists for the skeptics. The people who've heard too many wellness claims and want to see the actual data. We built it because we expect you to check our work.
What Actually Happens When Your Body Connects to the Earth
The Earth's surface carries a virtually limitless supply of free electrons — negatively charged particles that exist due to the planet's global electrical circuit, continuously driven by lightning activity worldwide.
When bare skin makes direct contact with the Earth — soil, grass, sand, stone — these electrons transfer freely into the body. This is grounding, or earthing.
The significance: free radicals — the molecules that drive chronic inflammation — are positively charged. They need electrons to neutralise. The Earth provides them in unlimited supply. This is not a theory. It is basic biochemistry, now confirmed across multiple controlled studies.
The Modern Problem
Rubber-soled shoes began replacing leather soles (which conducted electrons) in the 1960s. Elevated beds replaced ground-level sleeping. Insulated concrete and wood flooring replaced direct earth contact. Within decades, humans went from permanent connection with the Earth's electron supply to near-permanent disconnection. The research suggests this disconnection may be a significant and overlooked contributor to the rise of chronic inflammatory disease.

Every study below is publicly accessible on PubMed or NCBI. We encourage you to read them.
“The effects of grounding on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases”
Oschman, Chevalier & Brown conducted a comprehensive review of the earthing literature. Key findings: grounding reduces inflammation markers, promotes healthy sleep, synchronises cortisol secretion with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm, reduces pain, and shifts the body from physiological stress to normal function.
The paper concludes that the separation of the human body from the Earth — by shoes, elevated beds, insulated flooring — may be a significant and overlooked factor in the rise of chronic inflammatory disease.
“The biologic effects of grounding the human body during sleep as measured by cortisol levels and subjective reporting of sleep, pain, and stress”
Ghaly & Teplitz conducted a controlled study of subjects grounded during sleep using conductive pads — the same mechanism as TERRAVIVE. Results showed resynchronisation of cortisol secretion with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm. All grounded subjects reported significant improvements in sleep quality, pain levels, and stress.
“Earthing: health implications of reconnecting the human body to the Earth's surface electrons”
Chevalier et al. reviewed the evidence for earthing and its physiological effects. The review synthesised research showing that earthing modulates the nervous system, reduces inflammation, and improves blood viscosity — a key factor in cardiovascular health.
“Earthing (grounding) the human body reduces blood viscosity — a major factor in cardiovascular disease”
Chevalier et al. found that grounding significantly reduced blood viscosity and clumping of red blood cells — a primary driver of cardiovascular disease and poor circulation. Subjects were grounded for two hours in a single session, with measurable changes observed in blood samples via zeta potential analysis.
The same electron transfer. While you sleep.
The studies above used conductive pads connected to the Earth via a grounding cord — identical to the TERRAVIVE mechanism. The cord plugs into the earth pin of any standard wall outlet. No electricity passes through it. Only Earth's electrons.
What it is
A conductive carbon-infused pad that transfers electrons from the Earth's surface through a grounding cord plugged into the earth pin of a wall outlet — the same pin that protects your home from lightning.
What it isn't
Not an electrical device. No current flows through the pad. No EMF generated. No heat. No medication. The only thing transferred is the same electrons you'd receive walking barefoot on grass.
Why sleep matters
Sleep is when the body conducts its repair cycle. Grounding during sleep means 7–9 hours of uninterrupted electron transfer — precisely when the body needs anti-inflammatory support most.
Why it takes days, not minutes
Chronic inflammation built over years takes time to address. Most people notice a difference in 3–7 nights. Some feel it on night one. The research shows consistent, cumulative improvement with ongoing grounding.
30 nights. If nothing changes, you pay nothing.
The same mechanism used in the studies above. In your bed. Every night. Starting tonight.
